OMAHA, Neb. – Rutgers baseball saw its season come to an end with a 3-2 loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Charles Schwab Field.
While the Scarlet Knights (26-30) rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the sixth, the Buckeyes (30-24) tied it in the bottom of the sixth and took the lead in the eighth to earn the victory.
RU received strong outings on the mound, beginning with starter Zack Konstantinovsky. On short rest, he threw 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts, bringing his season total to 83 to tie for sixth-most in a season in program history.
Joe Mazza finished off the game for RU, pitching 2.2 innings of relief and allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
While Ohio State took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a solo home run, Rutgers rallied to take the lead in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Ryan Jaros reached on a fielder's choice and an error on the play allowed Chase Krewson to score from third. Another error from the Buckeyes allowed Matt Chatelle to score, giving the Scarlet Knights a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom half, OSU used an RBI single to tie things up. A two-out double in the eighth would give them the lead and a groundout would end the game in the top of the ninth, giving the Buckeyes the victory and allowing them to advance in the tournament bracket.
