Baseball Drops Game Two at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Rutgers baseball dropped Friday's contest at Northwestern by a score of 7-6 at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
The Scarlet Knights (25-28, 12-17) hit five home runs, but the Wildcats (21-29-1, 8-21) landed the final punch in the back-and-forth affair to earn the victory.
Jack Sweeney launched two home runs in the game, his third multi-home run game of the season and bringing his season total to seven. His three multi-home run games are the most in a season since Ryan Lasko had four in 2022.
Charlie Meglio, Chase Krewson and Trey Wells all hit solo home runs on the day as well. The trio all went deep in the third inning, with Krewson and Wells going back-to-back and giving RU a 3-0 lead.
An RBI single and two-run homer from Northwestern would tie it up at 3-3 heading into the sixth.
Sweeney's first homer made it 4-3 and Tyler Wiltsey added an RBI double to give the Scarlet Knights a 5-3 advantage, but the Wildcats answered with three in sixth to take a 6-5 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Sweeney hit a towering fly ball off the wall in left field and took advantage of a big bounce, racing home for an inside-the-park homer, the first for Rutgers since Brandon Boykin against Michigan in 2011.
The tie did not last for long, as the Wildcats took a 7-6 lead on a solo homer in the bottom half.
The Northwestern pitching staff would keep RU off the board in the final two innings to secure the win and force a rubber match.
The series finale between Rutgers and Northwestern is set for 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
