EVANSTON, Ill. – Rutgers baseball opened its series at Northwestern with an 8-5 win on Thursday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.

The Scarlet Knights (25-27, 12-16) scored six runs in the seventh to beat the Wildcats (20-29-1, 7-21) and lock up a spot in next week's Big Ten Tournament.

RU was down 4-1 after five but flipped the game in the later innings to open the series in the column.

A sac fly would give Northwestern an early 1-0 lead in the first before Matt Chatelle got Rutgers on the board with an RBI single in the fourth.

The Wildcats would rally for two in the fourth and another in the fifth to jump out to a 4-1 advantage.

Yomar Carreras single in one in the sixth and when Northwestern went to the bullpen for the seventh, the Scarlet Knights ambushed for six to take the lead.

The scoring barrage started with an RBI triple from Jack Sweeney, who then scored on a booted grounder to tie the game at 4-4. Trey Wells reached third later in the frame and used a slick swim move at home to avoid a tag and give Rutgers the lead. Ryan Jaros singled in another and Chase Krewson doubled in two more to bring it to 8-4.

Zack Konstantinovsky battled through five innings and Jordan Saviñon would replace him and threw a scoreless sixth.

After a leadoff walk in the seventh, Joe Mazza came in to close out the game. He struck out two in that frame to strand the runner and would complete the nine-out save. He yielded just one run on an RBI groundout and striking out six with no walks. It was his fourth save of the season.

With the win, head coach Steve Owens recorded his 1,100th career victory, which ranks No. 5 among active Division I head coaches.

Game two between Rutgers and Northwestern is set for 4 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon.
