Drauss and Huang Named Gymnastics Captains
Oct 27 | Women's Gymnastics
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Seniors Emily Drauss and Belle Huang will serve as the Rutgers gymnastics captains for the 2020-21 campaign. The duo, both WCGA Scholastic All-Americans, brings strong leadership in the classroom and in competition to the role.
"Emily and Belle exhibit leadership in everything they do. Their work ethic in the gym and in the classroom show that they are always pushing themselves to be better," said Head Coach Umme Salim-Beasley. "Outside the gym they conduct themselves in ways that always showcase Rutgers Gymnastics positively.
"Their ability to motivate and encourage their teammates is well respected. Not only do they want the best for themselves, they want the best for their team as well. We are excited to see the direction their leadership will take this team."
Drauss has competed in 20 meets for the Scarlet Knights, having reset her career-highs on beam and bars in 2020. The Longwood, Florida, native's personal-best mark of 9.825 on beam aided RU in posting the second-highest team score in the event for the program. Additionally, her career-best 9.825 on bars helped lift Rutgers to a home tri-meet victory last season. The Material Sciences Engineering major is a two-time WCGA Scholastic All-America, two-time Academic All-Big Ten, and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honoree.
Huang has competed in 38 meets "On the Banks", competing in all-around for RU with a career best of 39.300 in the event. The Gaithersburg, Maryland, native led the team on floor last season with an NQS of 9.855, posting a season-high of 9.900 at West Virginia. A season-best mark of 9.850 at the Big Five meet added to the Scarlet Knights' highest vault score in program history. An All-Big Ten selection and NCAA qualifier, Huang also excels as a Biological Sciences major, earning three WCGA Scholastic All-America, two Academic All-Big Ten, and two Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades.
Drauss and Huang both contributed to a historic season in 2020, including the highest road score ever for the program with a 195.900 to cap the shortened year. The score lifted RU over #15 Auburn for the Scarlet Knights highest recorded ranked win and first win over an SEC opponent. The program looks to carry that momentum into the new season.
