Award honors the top assistant coach in college football
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Sean Gleeson is a nominee for the Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Tuesday. The honor is given annually to the top assistant coach in college football.
"When I asked Sean to join our Rutgers football family, I saw an incredible offensive mind and someone who would get the most out of the players in our program," said head coach Greg Schiano. "What he and the offensive staff have accomplished in this first year is a testament to their hard work and commitment to our players, our vision and culture."
In his first season with the Scarlet Knights, Gleeson has led one of the most improved offensive units nationally and in the Big Ten. Rutgers' average of 27.4 points per game is on pace for its best scoring season in Big Ten play since joining the league in 2014. The 192 total points are 141 more than the 51 posted in Big Ten play last season (nine games), while the overall scoring offense increase of 14.1 points per game is fourth-best in the country. Total offense has also improved by 72.8 yards per game, the biggest jump in the conference.
Rutgers started the season with six consecutive games, all versus Big Ten opponents, with at least 20 points each outing. It marked the first time in program history the Scarlet Knights had posted five-straight conference games reaching that mark in any season. RU entered 2020 having recorded 20 points or more only five times the previous four seasons combined in Big Ten play (36 games) and 12 times in the first 52 games since joining the league.
In addition, the Scarlet Knights are one of eight teams nationally that have scored more points than in 2019 (+33) and the only team in the group that has played fewer than nine games this year.
Wide receiver Bo Melton earned a spot on the Biletnikoff Award watch, an honor that annually recognizes the college football season's outstanding FBS receiver. He has six receiving scores on 37 catches with 512 yards. Shameen Jones posted two scores in the Purdue win and has three overall with 317 yards.
Vedral paces the running game with 16 rushing first downs, while running back Isaih Pacheco ranks seventh in the league with 392 rushing yards. The offensive line returned one starter from 2019, Nick Krimin, and of the seven lineman who have made starts, three had never started an FBS game, two had less than two starts and another had only four.
Gleeson is a native of Glen Ridge, New Jersey.
The 56 Broyles Award nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,270 assistant coaches representing 127 Division One programs across the country. A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semifinalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner.
Rutgers football returns to the field Saturday at Maryland. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on Big Ten Network.

Gleeson has used three quarterbacks this season, with Noah Vedral, who joined the program in the offseason, making six starts. He ranks 22nd nationally and fifth in the Big Ten with 21.3 completions per game and threw for a career-high 381 yards, eighth-most in a game in Rutgers history, and three touchdowns versus Michigan. That included leading a 16-play drive to tie the game on a fourth-down pass with 27 seconds remaining and running in a two-point conversion to force overtime. At Purdue, Artur Sitkowski started and threw two touchdowns on 19-of-28 passing, while Johnny Langan rushed for nine first downs, threw a 62-yard scoring strike in the victory and has rushed for a team-high four touchdowns so far this year.OC/QBs Sean Gleeson has been nominated for the Broyles Award.
