Rossi 26th After Opening Round at Lake Oconee
Feb 21 | Women's Golf
GREENSBORO, Ga. – Maeve Rossi carded a 77 to pace three Scarlet Knights on day one of the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, played Friday on the Landing Course. Tied for 26th in the 79-player event, the sophomore was even on par five holes and registered 11 pars.
"I struggled with my putting and chipping during the middle of the round, but felt good about the rest of my game," said Rossi. "The course has some challenging holes that take more strategy off the tee, with a few shorter holes that will give us good looks at birdie. Tomorrow we will all look to take advantage of those scoring opportunities."
Day one of the tournament was played with temperatures starting in the mid-40's and warming into the 50's with light winds throughout the day.
Junior Eun Won Park and freshman Leigha Devine join Rossi in the 54-hole tournament on the par 72, 6,134-yard course. The trio is among a 15-team field that features host Mercer, No. 22 Auburn, Albany, Chattanooga, Daytona State, Delaware, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, North Florida, South Alabama, South Dakota State, UNC Ashville, UNC Wilmington, and Wofford.
Park and Devine both tallied 11 pars on Friday and enter Saturday's second round tied for 47th with 81 totals.
Denoted as one of America's Top Courses by Zagat and among the Best Courses You Can Play in Georgia by Golf Magazine, the Landing Course is the original course of Lake Oconee. It features a variety of holes that wind through naturally wooded areas and rolling hills. Originally opened in 1986 as Port Armor Golf Club, the Landing ranked as one of Georgia's best golf courses at its debut, second only to Augusta National.
The 54-hole Invitational continues Saturday via a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring is available via birdiefire.com.
