PISCATAWAY – Women's golf has earned its third straight National Girls and Women in Sports Day Team Academic Award, presented annually by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW).
"It is an honor to be recognized by the NJAIAW for our program's academic success," said head coach Kari Williams. "Our student-athletes continue to hold themselves to the highest standard in the classroom, on the course, and in the community. We appreciate the efforts of our dedicated support staff, especially Academic Advisor Gilah Rosenberg, for helping our student-athletes excel academically.
Rosenberg, senior Ana Cortes and junior Lori Char accepted the award Sunday at Seton Hall University's Richard Regan Recreation and Athletics Center. With a national theme of "Lead Her Forward," the luncheon recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of women's collegiate athletics.
Women's golf had a Fall 2019 grade point average of 3.73 to lead all Rutgers athletic programs. Char, Cortes, Carrie-Ann Lee, Leigha Devine, Anna-Maria Diederichs and Nicole Ewing earned Dean's List recognition, with Char and Ewing recording perfect 4.0 GPAs.
The Scarlet Knights have been honored as one of the nation's top 25 programs in academic performance by the WGCA for three consecutive years. With six student-athletes named 2018-19 WGCA Division I All-America Scholars, the team maintained a 3.781 team grade point average to place first among all Power 5 conference women's golf programs and eighth among Division I schools.
Women's golf begins its spring season on Monday at the Texas State Invitational at Plum Creek Golf Club in Kyle, Texas. RU will compete against 14 programs on the par 72, 6,290-yard course.
The Scarlet Knights completed the fall with a program-record Golfstat ranking of 80, while carding a program-best 299.07 scoring average. Rutgers placed fourth or better in four of its five tournaments, including a runner-up performance at the 13-team Bettie Lou Evans Invitational in Kentucky, where the team carded a program-record 281 in its final round.
