Softball Falls in Pair of Games on Day Two of Thundering Herd Round Robin

Bison Take Game One 7-1, Thunder Herd Charge Ahead 9-1

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Rutgers softball team dropped both its contests on Sunday at the Thundering Herd Round Robin at Dot Hicks Field with the Bucknell avenging Saturday's loss to the Scarlet Knights in a 7-1 victory and host Marshall using hot hitting for a 9-1 win.

Rutgers fell to 9-14 on the season.

BUCKNELL 7, RUTGERS 1

STANDOUT STATS
  • Ashley Hitchcock got the start striking out five of the first six Bucknell batters and allowing four hits in 3.1 innings total.
  • Graduate student Kiana Workman had a RBI single in the third inning with Taylor Fawcett scoring her sixth run of the weekend.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Bucknell broke the scoreless stalemate in the bottom of the third. Alyse Volpe tripled to the wall in center and came home on a single by Chase Knapp to short.
  • The Bison put up four more runs on four hits in the fifth. Another Volpe triple added a run and she notched another run scored off a Nicole Rivait single to second. Then with the bases loaded, Haile Mariano doubled to left center to give Bucknell a 5-0 edge.
  • The Scarlet Knights scored their lone run of the contest in the top of the sixth. Kiana Workman found space in right field to score lead off Taylor Fawcett. Rutgers tried to add another run on Katie Wingert's single to left, but pinch runner Mya Mancini was tagged out at the plate.
  • Bucknell added two more in its final appearance at the plate in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Taylor Wolfgang singled to left for two RBI. The Scarlet Knights got out of the inning with Anyssa Iliopoulos in left sending the ball to Wingert at the plate to find second baseman Aleah Marra catching Wolfgang trying to advance to second.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Ashley Hitchcock has tossed five or more strikeouts in eight of her 17 appearances.
  • Taylor Fawcett scored her team-leading 14th run of the season.

MARSHALL 9, RUTGERS 1

THE RUNDOWN
  • Marshall's Mya Stevenson went 3-for-3 with two home runs and seven RBI in the win.
  • The Thundering Herd struck in the top of the first with an RBI single by Stevenson to put the hosts up. Stevenson was prevented from scoring on Katie Adam's double on the next at-bat, as she was thrown out at home on the throw from center by Taylor Fawcett.
  • Aleah Marra tied up the game in the top of the third scoring on a single to center from Payton Lincavage.
  • Marshall, however, went back in front at the bottom of the inning. Despite a diving catch by Kiana Workman to capture the second out, Stevenson went deep to center for a three-run home run and a 4-1 Thundering Herd edge.
  • Another Herd home run, this time from the bat of Haleigh Christopher, pushed Marshall's lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Stevenson ended the contest knocking out her second three-run home run of the contest in the fifth.
