Twelve Gymnasts Earn WCGA Scholastic All-America Honors
Aug 11 | Women's Gymnastics
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers gymnastics had 12 representatives on the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Scholastic All-America list released this week. To be recognized for this honor, student-athletes must carry a grade-point average of 3.50 or better during the 2019-20 academic year.
The 12 honorees tops the 11 Scholastic All-Americans from a year ago, which had then marked the most for the Scarlet Knights since 2012.
"We are so please with what our team was able to accomplish in the classroom this year. We always stress academics first," said Head Coach Umme Salim-Beasley. "With the abrupt end to our in-person instruction, our team had to adapt quickly to their new academic requirements. They handled the stress of the change like every athlete is trained to do and they rose to the challenge. To end up with 12 Academic All-Americans, topping our 11 from last season just shows the strength and determination of this team. They are exemplary of student-athletes."
The recognition follows eight Scarlet Knights earning Academic All-Big Ten honors this winter, including Sophia Atienza, Kiera Doherty-Herwitz, Emily Drauss, Kaitlyn Hall, Belle Huang, Abigail Karolewski, Sage Littlejohn, and Erin McLachlan. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students-athletes must have been enrolled full-time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Additionally, Atienza, Huang and McLachlan were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for earning a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year.
As a team, Rutgers received public recognition for its academic success by the NCAA with its multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. To earn recognition, a program must post a score in the top 10 percent of its respective sport.
