ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Rutgers men's soccer (8-4-2, 2-4-1) fell at Michigan (7-5-3, 4-2-1) by a 2-1 score on Friday night at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines handed Rutgers its first road loss this season (3-1-1) by scoring in each half with markers in the 39
th and 64
th minutes to edge out a home victory and take sole possession of third place in the Big Ten with one conference match day remaining.
RU junior wingback
Chris Tiao scored his first collegiate goal in the contest, drawing the match even at 1-1 in the 52
nd minute. Tiao collected a clear, beat a man with a quick dribble, then sent a screamer from 25 yards out into the right-side netting for the equalizer.
Tiao became the 10
th different Scarlet Knight to score a goal this season and the 13
th to record a point.
The Wolverines had an answer with the eventual game-winner in the 64
th, avoiding a second equalizer over the final 38 minutes.
Rutgers'
Pablo Avila (2) and
Jason Bouregy tested the Michigan keeper with shots on target. Overall, Michigan led 13-7 in shots and 8-4 in shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Oren Asher made six saves to keep the contest within one score.
Michigan increases its lead in the all-time series to 7-2-2. U-M is now unbeaten at 4-0-2 against Rutgers in the last six meetings.
Rutgers has two matches remaining in the 2021 regular season, on the road at UConn to wrap up non-conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. and then home at Yurcak on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. against Ohio State.
