Jackson Temple scores first career brace before Huskies score three unanswered

STORRS, Conn. – Rutgers men's soccer (8-5-2) concluded non-conference play with a 4-2 setback at UConn (7-5-2) on Wednesday evening at Joseph J. Marrone Stadium at Rizza Performance Center.

Junior Jackson Temple recorded his first collegiate brace with the two goals, while Pablo Avila assisted Temple's pair of tallies for the senior's first multi-helper match. But UConn answered Temple's flurry with three unanswered goals to score the home victory.

In a fast a furious first half, the two sides combined for three goals in just over three minutes of play with Rutgers ahead 2-1 on Temple's brace. The opener in the 14th was started by Avila's through ball deep into the Huskies box, where Temple took a touch to stumble the keeper and slot the shot home for the 1-0 lead.

After UConn's equalizer less than a minute later, it was Avila again in the 17th playing ahead to Temple. This time, the long pass on the left sideline was collected and dribbled into the 18, where Temple found the angle and buried the shot to the upper right and RU led 2-1.

The Huskies tied it up again in the 35th minute. UConn almost opened the scoring, appearing to go ahead 1-0 in just the 10th minute after a header into net on a cross, but the assistant referee's flag signaled offsides and Rutgers took over with zeroes still on the scoreboard.

Temple tallied career goals No. 11 and 12, while Avila posted assists No. 3 and 4, his first since 2019.

The Huskies led in overall shots (16-4) and shots on target (9-2). Rutgers was flagged offsides six times and earned two corners.

UConn leads the all-time series 13-10-1 dating back to 1982 and have won three in a row in 2011, 2013, and now 2021. Rutgers is now 11-2-3 in non-conference action under head coach Jim McElderry.

Rutgers wraps Big Ten play and the 2021 regular season at Yurcak Field on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. against Ohio State. The Scarlet Knights will honor three members of the Rutgers Class of 2021 on Senior Day.
