BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sixth-seeded Rutgers men's soccer (9-6-2) bowed out of the 2021 Big Ten Tournament in the quarterfinals after a 1-0 loss to No. 22 ranked and No. 3 seed Indiana (13-4-1) in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Hoosiers, after going shotless in the opening 20 minutes, scored the contest's lone goal in the 27
th minute. Rutgers, searching for an equalizer, was without its leading scorer after junior forward and All-Big Ten Second Team selection
Jackson Temple exited the match in the 6
th minute with an injury and did not return.
It was Rutgers with the first opportunity in the 24
th minute when
Chris Tiao found himself all alone at the penalty spot after a deflected pass but could not connect with full power and the shot was scooped for the save. The Scarlet Knights placed two other shots on target off the feet of reserves
Colin Beasley and
Anthony O'Donnell, both saved by Indiana keeper Roman Celentano, the 2021 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year.
Rutgers outshot the Hoosiers, 8-5, overall, with the 3-2 edge in shots on target and also holding a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks generated.
Indiana holds an 11-3-2 advantage in the 16 head-to-head matchups played between the two programs. The two sides have met nine times on the pitch since Rutgers joined the Big Ten Conference ahead of the 2014 season. Indiana holds a series edge of 6-2-1 in those matches. Rutgers falls to 2-7-1 in the Big Ten Tournament since joining the conference in 2014.
