Gotterup, Whatley Top 15 at Kiawah Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Seniors Christopher Gotterup and Oliver Whatley are both under par and within the Top 15 after Monday play at the 2021 Kiawah Invitational in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. With the second round suspended due to darkness, Rutgers men's golf is currently 10th at six under, one of 11 programs with under-par scorecards.
The Scarlet Knights will have eight holes to finish from round two before the final round, with both rounds set to tee off at 8 a.m. ET tomorrow morning on the Par 72, 6,701-yard Oak Point Course at the Kiawah Island Resort. Wake Forest currently leads at 33-under-par, followed by Kentucky (-23) and Clemson (-18).
Gotterup is six strokes off the lead, held by Wake Forest's Eric Bae at 11-under-par. Gotterup, who is currently No. 18 in the latest PGA Tour University rankings, produced eight birdies on Monday and is tied for 12th at five under. Whatley is at four under and is tied for 15th.
Sophomores Luke Wells, Xavier Marcoux and Brendan Hansen round out the team scorecard tied for 49th, 57th and 76th, respectively. After he fired off a top-10 round to open play on Monday with a three-under-par 69, rookie Rhett Sellers is tied for 57th competing as an individual.
Opening Round
Three Scarlet Knights – Gotterup, Sellers and Whatley – came in under par during the first round, which was moved from Sunday to Monday due to inclement weather. Competing as an individual, Sellers played bogey-free golf in his first collegiate stroke play round with birdies on holes nine, 12 and 15.
As a team, Rutgers collected 18 birdies to finish with a two-under-par 286 in the first round. The Scarlet Knights were one of nine programs to come in under par in the opening 18 holes.
Second Round
Rutgers played 10 holes before the second round was halted due to darkness, as Gotterup opened the afternoon with three consecutive birdies. Whatley moved up two spots on the leaderboard and is currently two-under-par with eight holes to play in round two.
