Feb 16 | Men's Golf
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Senior Christopher Gotterup carded three consecutive rounds under par to highlight action for Rutgers men's golf at the 2021 Kiawah Invitational on Tuesday in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. The senior finished with a four-under-par 212 (70-71-71) to tie for 16th in the 90-player field, played at the Oak Point Course at the Kiawah Island Resort.
The Scarlet Knights battled consistent wind throughout play on Tuesday to finish 11th with a two-over-par 866 (286-287-293), which included back-to-back rounds to open the tournament. Five Scarlet Knights combined for eight rounds of even or under-par scorecards, which included an impressive three-under-par, bogey-free 69 from rookie Rhett Sellers on Monday. Senior Oliver Whatley came in under par twice, sophomore Luke Wells added a one-under-par 71 in the second round while classmate Xavier Marcoux played even golf in round three.
Wake Forest won the team title, followed by Clemson and Kentucky. Wake Forest's Michael Brennan captured the individual title with a 16-under-par 200 (67-68-65).
"Our guys showed some good signs over the past two days against the tournament's deep field," said head coach Rob Shutte. "The conditions today were challenging, but we know we are a talented team that can go toe-to-toe with a lot of these programs when we're on our game. We're looking forward to getting home and going right back to work as we gear up for the rest of the spring season."
Gotterup played consistent golf throughout the tournament, which squeezed 27 rounds into back-to-back days after Sunday's opening round was rained out. The Little Silver, New Jersey, native finished with 11 birdies over his three rounds, which included a one-under-par 71 round to close out the tournament on Tuesday.
Marcoux also had a strong final round with his even 72 on Tuesday, which included birdies on holes eight and 12 to help him tie for 50th (220: 74-74-72). Whatley finished two-over-par (218: 70-71-77) to tie for 39th, while Wells (219: 72-71-76) and sophomore Brendan Hansen (227: 74-79-74) rounded out the team scorecard tied for 46th and 81st, respectively. Competing as an individual, Sellers tied for 64th (223: 69-78-76).
Rutgers gets a few weeks off from tournament play before it competes at the Spartan Collegiate from March 8-9 in Sea Island, Georgia.
