Men’s Golf Records Back-to-Back Wins to Close Big Ten Match Play Championship

PALM COAST, Fla. – Rutgers men's golf registered back-to-back wins over Nebraska and Ohio State to close out play at the 2021 Big Ten Match Play Championship on Saturday in Palm Coast, Florida. The Scarlet Knights downed the Cornhuskers, 4.5-0.5, and followed with a 3.5-1.5 victory over the Buckeyes at the Hammock Beach Golf Resort.
Christopher Gotterup and Luke Wells both recorded two individual wins on Saturday, while Xavier Marcoux, Rhett Sellers and Oliver Whatley all added a victory apiece. Marcoux and Whatley also added ties against Ohio State and Nebraska, respectively.
"I'm proud of the way our guys closed the championships with two wins against quality Big Ten opponents," said head coach Rob Shutte. "Everyone showed a lot of fight and today's performance sets a positive tone for the rest of the spring season."
In total, Rutgers registered nine head-to-head wins and three all-square results during weekend action, which also included matchups against Maryland and Wisconsin on Friday. Marcoux finished with three wins and a tie, while Gotterup led the field with 18 birdies in four rounds of action.
The Scarlet Knights opened Saturday with a convincing 4.5-0.5 win over Nebraska, as Gotterup, Marcoux, Sellers and Wells all won their matchups while Whatley earned a tie. Gotterup, Wells and Whatley added wins to go along with a tie from Marcoux to secure a 3.5-1.5 win against Ohio State. Gotterup's 4&3 win against the Buckeyes came versus Elis Svard, ranked No. 105 in the country in the latest PGA Tour University standings.
Rutgers continues its spring season from Feb. 14-15 at the Kiawah Invitational in Kiawah, South Carolina.
