Wrestling Earns Three Top-10 Seeds for 2021 NCAA Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Brackets and seeding for the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships, held March 18-20 in St. Louis, were announced Wednesday night. Sebastian Rivera (141), Michael VanBrill (149) and John Poznanski (184) earned top-10 seeds, marking the second time Rutgers wrestling will have three or more top-10 seeds at the national tournament under head coach Scott Goodale.

With Jackson Turley (174) and Billy Janzer (197) also earning at-large selections, the Scarlet Knights will bring five or more wrestlers to nationals for the seventh consecutive season.

Rivera earned a No. 3 seed and gets No. 30 seed Dylan D'Emilio (Ohio State) in the first round. A three-time All-American, Rivera was the No. 1 seed at 133 pounds last season before the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. Rivera is 8-1 this season and finished third at the Big Ten Championships last weekend after he defeated Chad Red (Nebraska) in the consolation final.

Poznanski will make his NCAA Championships debut as the No. 6 seed and faces No. 27 seed Taylor Brown (Army) in the first round. Poznanski finished his first collegiate season 7-2 with wins over five ranked foes, including a pin of No. 10 Owen Webster (Minnesota) and a 3-2 decision over No. 16 Nelson Brands (Iowa) at Big Tens en route to his third-place finish.

VanBrill earned the No. 10 seed at 149 pounds and faces No. 23 seed Tristan Lara (Northern Iowa) to open the tournament. A two-time national qualifier, VanBrill produced one of the best individual performances in program history at the Big Ten Championships last weekend, wrestling back to take out the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 seeds to claim third-place honors.

Turley is the No. 26 seed after he earned an at-large selection to his first NCAA Championships and gets No. 7 seed Kaleb Romero (Ohio State) in the first round. A two-time NCAA qualifier, Janzer is the No. 33 seed as an at-large selection and faces No. 32 seed Logan Andrew (Chattanooga) in a first-round pigtail.

The 2021 NCAA Championships begin Thursday, March 18 with Session I at 10 a.m. ET. All seven sessions of the championships will broadcast exclusively on the ESPN family of networks, with all mat feeds available via ESPN+.
