Softball Topped By Indiana in Doubleheader

LEESBURG, Fla. – Rutgers softball moved on to the next series at the Sleepy Hollow Softball Complex and were topped in Saturday's doubleheader with the Indiana Hoosiers.

STANDOUT STATS
  • Freshman Megan Herka collected her first home run of her Scarlet Knight career. The Edison, New Jersey native also had a double and finished game 2-for-3.
  • Sophomore Payton Lincavage went 3-for-4 with a run, while rookie Kayla Bock went 1-for-2 with a double.
  • Sophomore lefthander Jaden Vickers pitched 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Indiana scored two runs in the first and second to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
  • The Hoosiers got on the scoreboard with Gabbi Jenkins stealing home and Hannah Davis using an RBI single thru the left side in the first.
  • The second inning saw Brooke Benson score off a sac fly right and Taylor Lambert come home on a wild pitch.
  • Rutgers added a run in the top of the third with Kayla Bock sending the ball into left for an RBI double.
  • Indiana responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Brittany Ford came out of the dugout to pinch hit and collected a grand slam. Jenkins sent in the fifth run of the inning on a single to center.
  • Megan Herka led off the top of the fourth take a 2-2 count straight over the centerfield fence.
  • The Hoosiers countered in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to center from Grace Lorsung.
  • The Scarlet Knights also tacked on a run in the fifth. Loading the bases with no outs, Kiersten Withstandley was hit at the plate to score Payton Lincavage.
  • Indiana loaded the bases again in the bottom of the seventh as Lambert used a sac fly to center to end the game.

STANDOUT STATS
  • Sophomore Payton Lincavage extended her hitting streak to eight with RU's lone hit of the contest and was responsible for sending in the Scarlet Knight run.
  • Freshman Kobie Hura recorded her second run of the 2021 campaign.
  • Righthander Ashley Hitchcock started inside the circle and pitched 4.1 innings with four strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Solo home runs from Katie Lacefield in the second and Taylor Lambert in the third put Indiana up 2-0.
  • Rutgers made it a one-run game in the bottom of the third with a Payton Lincavage single down the left side and Kobie Hura beating the throw to the plate.
  • The Hoosiers however tacked on four runs in the fourth. With two outs, Lambert drove in two runs on a single to center and scored off a Gabbi Jenkins triple to right-center.
  • Indiana also added two in the top of the seventh. Hannah Davis used a squeeze bunt and Lacefield walked her in with the bases loaded to round out scoring for the day.

The Scarlet Knights close out the series with Indiana at the Sleepy Hollow Softball Complex on Sunday at noon.
