ST. LOUIS – Sebastian Rivera (141) and
John Poznanski (184) earned fourth-place finishes as Rutgers wrestling wrapped up action at the 2021 NCAA Championships on Saturday in St. Louis. With
Jackson Turley (174) finishing eighth in his first national tournament, the Scarlet Knights closed the postseason with three All-Americans in the same year for the first time in program history.
Rivera is now a four-time NCAA All-American and has done so at three different weight classes (125, 133 and 141) during his illustrious collegiate career. Poznanski produced the highest finish for a freshman in program history, while Turley wrestled back from an opening-round loss to earn four consecutive wins and All-America laurels. Along with two-time NCAA qualifiers
Michael VanBrill (149) and
Billy Janzer (197), RU produced 13 victories en route to a 13th-place finish with 37.5 team points.
Under head coach
Scott Goodale, Rutgers has now produced two-or-more All-Americans at the national tournament for the sixth consecutive season. Poznanski and Rivera's appearances in Friday night's championship semifinals also marked back-to-back NCAA Championships with multiple national semifinalists after
Anthony Ashnault and
Nick Suriano did so in 2019 en route to their NCAA individual titles. Poznanski and Rivera's top-four finishes also marked just the third time multiple wrestlers placed in the top four for Rutgers, joining Ashnault and Suriano (2019) and Emil Perona and Ray Vohden (1952).
"We're just really proud of the way these guys wrestled this weekend," Goodale said. "It's extremely difficult to get on the podium at the national tournament, so to leave here with three All-Americans is a huge accomplishment for our program. But there is plenty of work left to do and we know that."
In the 141-pound consolation semifinals, Rivera faced No. 14 seed Dylan Duncan (Illinois) in a rematch from the championship second round. The Toms Rivers, New Jersey, native produced back-to-back takedowns in the first two periods and added two escape points and the riding time point in the third for a 7-4 decision over Duncan to advance. Rivera then faced No. 4 seed Tariq Wilson (NC State) and lost by major decision, 15-5, to place fourth.
Poznanski faced No. 11 seed Dakota Geer (Oklahoma State) for the second time at the championships and scored eight points, including a four-point near fall – to go up 8-2 after the first period. Poznanski added a takedown in the second en route to a 10-6 decision to advance. The 184-pound third-place match featured two freshmen, as Poznanski faced No. 4 seed Parker Keckeisen (Northern Iowa). Poznanski trailed 5-2 in the third period before he added back-to-back points on an escape and stall call on Keckeisen to have a chance late in the match. However, Keckeisen held on for the 5-4 decision.
Turley injury defaulted to eighth and did not wrestle on Saturday after getting hurt on Friday. The sophomore finished the NCAA Championships with four wins, including a 7-5 decision over No. 6 seed Andrew McNally (Kent State) in the blood round to claim All-America honors.
