Apr 17 | Field Hockey
COLLEGE PARK, Maryland – No. 6 Rutgers field hockey wrapped up the regular season at No. 12 Maryland on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1. Milena Redlingshoefer scored a fourth-quarter goal for RU, but the Terps answered with the game-winner in the waning minutes of the game.
Rutgers outshot Maryland 12-7 in the game. The Scarlet Knights also had a 6-2 advantage in corners.
The Terps struck first in this game. Seven minutes into the contest, a pass was sent in from the wing, where it was redirected in midair for the game's first goal.
In the second quarter, Maryland earned a penalty stroke, but Gianna Glatz came up huge for RU, diving to her right to get a stick on the ball, saving the stroke and keeping the Terps from adding to the lead. That save kept the score 1-0 at halftime in a fairly evenly played opening half hour of field hockey.
The game remained fairly even through three quarters, with Maryland holding their 1-0 lead. Shots were just 4-4 after 45 minutes of action.
In the fourth quarter, Rutgers earned a penalty stroke, and capitalized. Milena Redlingshoefer scored on the penalty stroke, tying the game at 1-1 with eight minutes to play.
The team continued to apply pressure from there, earning multiple corners and registering seven straight shots in the game. However, Maryland tallied late in the game. After the initial shot was saved, knocking the ball out of the air to convert the rebound.
The Scarlet Knights will next head to Iowa City for the Big Ten Tournament. After finishing in a four-way tie for third place, Rutgers will face Northwestern at 7:30 pm on Wednesday. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
