COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Rutgers tennis defeated Maryland by a score of 4-3 in its regular season finale Saturday afternoon on the road. The Scarlet Knights claimed the doubles point and three singles victories for their fourth Big Ten dual win of the year and second over the Terrapins this spring.
"We knew this would be a very different match than when we played them a few weeks ago. Chloe and Jaci demonstrated a lot of guts to earn their third sets. Our players continue to push themselves and I'm happy it paid off today," said Head Coach Hilary Ritchie.
RU picked up the early doubles point to earn a 1-0 lead over UMD. Redshirt senior Jaci Cochrane and freshman Daira Cardenas won the first doubles match 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Maryland fought back to claim the second doubles match, but junior Tess Fisher and freshman Alisa Prinyarux ensured the doubles point in a hard fought match at the No. 2 spot winning 7-5.
Moving onto singles, Maryland took the first singles point at the No. 1 spot. Cardenas pushed back winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot. The Terrapins answered back by taking the third and fourth singles point, edging out a 3-2 lead.
Cochrane fought her way to a victory at the No. 5 position after a close three sets, bringing the match back to tie at 3-3. After a long three-set battle, freshman Chloe Brown secured the win for the Scarlet Knights at the No. 4 spot, clinching her fifth Big Ten win of the season. She won in a strong rally by scores of 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
"Our hard fought victory over Maryland in today's season finisher was extremely rewarding. We will use this win as proof to ourselves of our capabilities and future success in the Big Ten," said Brown. "Further, I am proud for contributing with my first ever clinch with the help of my gritty and resilient teammates!"
Up next, Rutgers is set to compete in the Big Ten Tournament slated for April 28-May 1 hosted at Wisconsin.
