No. 22 Women's Soccer Earns Ninth Straight NCAA Tournament Bid
Apr 19 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 22 Rutgers women's soccer has qualified for its ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament, as announced on Monday's NCAA Division I Selection Show. Rutgers will face Southeastern Louisiana in the First Round on Tuesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. ET. The match will be hosted at Campbell University in Buis Creek, North Carolina.
"To continue the streak of nine straight bids for the program is remarkable. We have made it a standard at this program to continue to make the NCAA tournament and to continue this streak is incredible," said senior captain Gabby Provenzano. "We are extremely excited and pumped up going into the tournament. Our mentality is to take it one game at a time focusing on preparing for Southeastern Louisiana. We can't wait to get started and see what we are made of."
Rutgers produced a mark of 8-3-3 overall, 6-2-3 in Big Ten play, and a 5-0 undefeated mark at home. The team was anchored by a program-tying record of seven All-Big Ten selections this year.
Senior forward Amirah Ali, a MAC Hermann Trophy candidate and Senior CLASS Award Finalist, owns a team-high 13 points (6g, 1a). Classmate Nneka Moneme followed with three goals on the year, as 10 different Scarlet Knights contributed to scoring this spring.
The RU defense has held all 14 opponents to single-digit shots on goal this year and nine to just single-digit shots overall. In net, junior Meagan McClelland has recorded six shutouts and 34 saves across 1340 minutes played.
Additionally, the Scarlet Knights competed in their seventh straight Big Ten Tournament, claiming the No. 3 seed in the East. The Scarlet Knights reached their second straight and fourth conference semifinal since joining the league in 2014.
The NCAA bid marks the ninth straight, 11th in the last 13 years, and 15th overall. The entirety of this year's Tournaments will be played in the state of North Carolina. Currently, the campus venues that will host tournament games are at University of North Carolina, Campbell, East Carolina, University of North Carolina Wilmington, UNC Greensboro and Wake Forest.
This year's field will include 48 women's teams. The move to host all contests in one state is effective for this year's men's and women's soccer championships, which were postponed last fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Division I Men's and Women's Soccer Committees believe having both championships in one geographic location will minimize travel and condense the overall time to conduct the championships. It also minimizes the number of local and state health jurisdiction guidelines by which to abide. In addition, the proposal centralizes and provides efficiencies for COVID-19 testing sites and setup.
Both the women's and men's tournaments will conclude with the NCAA College Cups at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The women's national semifinals will be May 13 and the men's May 14, while both national champions will be crowned May 17.
