Apr 03 | Men's Golf
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Rookie Rhett Sellers carded a two-under-par 69 and Rutgers men's golf moved up five spots in the final round to finish fourth at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate on Saturday in Kannapolis, North Carolina. The Scarlet Knights fired off a one-over-par 285 in the final round for the biggest move up the team leaderboard on Saturday, as senior Christopher Gotterup and sophomores Xavier Marcoux and Luke Wells all finished within the top 20 of the 84-player field at the Club at Irish Creek.
"We dug ourselves in a little hole in the first round on Friday but I was proud of the way the guys bounced back with back-to-back low rounds," said head coach Rob Shutte. "We played the back nine extremely well this morning and it was great to see Rhett compete in a huge way down the stretch like he did. There were a lot of positives to take out of this weekend as we continue to grind through the spring."
Co-host UNC-Wilmington won the tournament with its seven-under-par 845 (287-283-275), followed by VCU (+9) and Jacksonville (+12). UNC-Wilmington's Sander Akeren won the individual title with his 14-under-par 199 (70-64-65).
Rutgers produced 38 birdies and a tournament-high three eagles across 54 holes, as Gotterup (217: 76-69-72), Marcoux (217: 72-72-73) and Wells (217: 77-69-71) all tied for 16th. Senior Oliver Whatley tied for 49th with his 224 (78-70-76), while Sellers rolled in four birdies on Saturday to finish with an impressive two-under-par 69 and tie for 64 (227: 78-80-69).
