Gotterup Cards Top-10 Finish to Close Big Ten Championships
May 02 | Men's Golf
CARMEL, Ind. – Senior Christopher Gotterup shot a blazing four-under-par 68 in the final round as Rutgers men's golf finished play at the Big Ten Championships, contested Sunday at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. Gotterup's four under this afternoon, which was the low round of the entire three-day tournament, helped the Little Silver, New Jersey, native finish tied for sixth, his second consecutive top-10 result at the championships.
Gotterup – ranked No. 31 in the latest PGA Tour University Rankings – has now produced top five results in three of his past five outings, which also includes a tied for second result at the Schenkel Invitational on March 21 and a third-place result at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on April 18.
"Chris demonstrated in today's final round why he's one of the best in the country," said head coach Rob Shutte. "He's just incredibly talented. He had some challenges on Saturday, but he knows how to bounce back and he did just that with the low round of the tournament. I'm proud of the way he responded today."
As high as fourth on the team leaderboard during the championships, Rutgers finished eighth in the 14-team-field with its three round 909 (307-301-301). No. 11 Illinois captured the team title with its 19-over-par 883 (300-294-289), followed by No. 38 Iowa (+20) and Northwestern (+33). Iowa's Mac McClear won the individual Big Ten title with a one-under-par 215 (74-70-71).
"There was a moment there where we had a real opportunity to finish as high as third, but there were a few moments we obviously wish we had back," Shutte said. With the wind conditions, some teams made birdies and some didn't. Despite the final result, there were plenty of positives to take out of this weekend."
Gotterup moved up 15 spots on the final leaderboard to finish with a five-over-par 221 (77-76-68), as he rolled in six birdies on Sunday to secure the lowest round in the 74-player field. Three Scarlet Knights – senior Oliver Whatley, sophomore Luke Wells and rookie Rhett Sellers – tied for 29th with their 14-over-par 230s, as Sellers was as high as tenth in the field during his first Big Ten Championships. Sophomore Xavier Marcoux rounded the team scorecard tied for 59th.
Individual and team selections for the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships will be announced on May 5 at 2 p.m. ET on the GOLF Channel.
