PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Three from Rutgers men's golf – Christopher Gotterup, Luke Wells and Oliver Whatley – collected 2021 PING Northeast Region honors, announced this weekend by the organization. Gotterup is the first four-time all-region selection in program history, while Wells and Whatley earned all-region status for the first time in their collegiate careers.
Five Scarlet Knights have combined for nine PING all-region accolades under the guidance of head coach Rob Shutte, as Tony Jiang (2019-2020) and Jonathan Chang (2014) all appeared on the prestigious list during their time "On the Banks". Gotterup has earned all-region status four times since his rookie season in 2017-18.
One of the top individuals in program history, Gotterup wrapped up his final season at Rutgers with a top-20 finish at the 2021 NCAA Kingston Springs East Regional earlier this month, the first time the program had representation at NCAA Regionals since 2005. A three-time All-Big Ten selection and 2020 All-American, Gotterup recorded a tied-for-sixth result at the 2021 Big Ten Championships in Carmel, Indiana – highlighted by his tournament-low four-under-par 68 in the final round to secure second-team all-conference recognition. Gotterup also earned first-team laurels last spring and second-team accolades as a sophomore in 2019. The Little Silver, New Jersey, native was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year as a junior in 2020 and also collected the league's Les Bolstad Award, given to the lowest conference stroke average that season.
Wells appeared in all eight varsity events during his first season with Rutgers after he transferred from Butler last fall. The Springfield, Ohio, native produced six rounds of even or under-par golf in 21 rounds during the spring campaign, as he finished with a 73.66 scoring average. Wells carded a tied-for-29th result at the Big Ten Championships earlier this month in Carmel, Indiana.
An Academic All-Big Ten selection and 2020 Srixon/Cleveland All-America Scholar, Whatley finished the 2021 season with six rounds of even or below-par golf, highlighted by back-to-back below-par rounds at the Kiawah Invitational to open the stroke play season. Whatley also added a head-to-head victory against Ohio State to help Rutgers to a 3.5-1.5 win over the Buckeyes at the 2021 Big Ten Match Play Championship in February and finished the stroke play season with a 74.33 scoring average.
