Assistants also earn CRCA Regional Staff of the Year honor
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers head rowing coach Justin Price has been named the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Region 4 Coach of the Year, announced by the CRCA on Tuesday.
Assistant Coaches Julia Vari and Sarah Jordan, Director of Operations Mary Connelly, and Volunteer Assistant Coaches Olivia Betz and Chris Pedicone have earned the CRCA Region 4 Staff of the Year honor.
The CRCA Coach and Staff of the Year Awards are intended to recognize coaches and staffs that fit the criteria of outstanding success during the current season, team improvement from the prior season, fulfilling the team's potential and demonstrating a high level of professionalism and integrity.
During Price's fourth season at the helm, the Scarlet Knights qualified for their second consecutive NCAA Championships in 2021 and placed seventh at the national regatta behind the Varsity 8 boat's fifth-place showing in the grand final. Price led Rutgers to an 11th place NCAA Championships finish in 2019 after snapping an 18-year drought for the Scarlet Knights at the national event.
All three NCAA boats qualified for the A/B semifinals with the Second Varsity 8 finishing 10th in the nation and the Varsity 4 winning their petite final for a seventh-place national finish.
Rutgers also had its best showing at the Big Ten Championships in 2021, setting program records at the conference regatta for team finish (third), points (143), medal-winning boats (five), and All-Conference selections (four). The Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Varsity 4 all earned their first-even Big Ten medals, while overall, five of the seven RU boats posted record finishes at the Big Ten Championships.
Price coached the 2021 Big Ten Freshman of Year, Hannah Heideveld, the first major Big Ten award garnered by the Rutgers program. Another underclassman, sophomore Christina Pender, was invited to the USRowing National Team Selection Camp following the NCAA Championships run.
Rutgers was ranked as high as No. 4 in the country in 2021, the highest CRCA ranking in program history. This came after the Scarlet Knights won 12 of 21 races against a stacked field at the Big Ten Invitational in April, including a sweep of the NCAA-qualifying events against then-No. 7 Alabama, and earning ranked wins over Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, Princeton, Washington State, and Wisconsin.
The Scarlet Knights continue to excel in the classroom with 48 selections to Academic All-Big Ten and Sophia Catuogno earning the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship.
