Men’s Soccer Ties Temple After Scoreless 110 Minutes

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – One hundred and ten minutes could not separate Rutgers men's soccer and Temple in a scoreless draw on Monday evening at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights remain unbeaten at 1-0-1, while the Owls tie their second consecutive match to start the season 0-0-2.

Rutgers played with 10 men for the final 65 minutes of the 110-minute affair after Jackson Temple was sent off with a straight red card seconds before halftime following a hard foul. The match was also paused in the 12th minute for lightning in the area – the delay lasted 45 minutes.

The Scarlet Knights had the best chance of the day with a penalty kick in the 98th minute, but the Nico Rosamilia attempt to the low-left corner was denied by Temple goalkeeper Eoin Gawronsky, who stopped his second overtime penalty in as many matches for the Owls.

Oren Asher is 2-for-2 in shutouts on the season, needing just one save in his ninth career clean sheet.

"We started the game well," said head coach Jim McElderry. "After the lightning delay, we may have lost some intensity, then getting the red card was challenging. The guys buckled down and competed well. The penalty in overtime would have been a great reward for them, but that happens in soccer. I am proud of the effort and how they grinded it out."

It was another chippy game at Yurcak with each team picking up three cards. The Scarlet Knights outshot Temple 11-8 on the night, with each team getting two shots in extra time. The Owls had a 5-3 edge in shots, however, following the Rutgers red card.

Three Rutgers freshmen made the starting lineup for a second-straight match with Matthew Acosta in the midfield, Rosamilia at forward and Joey Zalinsky on defense. Grad transfer Xavi Olmos made his Rutgers debut and put in 29 minutes.

Vincent Borden, Hugo Le Guennec, and Zalinsky all went the distance with 110 minutes logged in the double-overtime draw.

The Rutgers-Temple series moves to 19-17-3 all-time since 1947.

The Scarlet Knights hit the road for the first time on Friday, Sept. 3 at Princeton in a 7 p.m. match on ESPN+.
