Scarlet Knights win 2-1 to improve to 3-0 on the season

STORRS, Conn. – No. 15 Rutgers field hockey continued its hot start to the season, winning 2-1 in double overtime at No. 6 UConn on Friday evening. The victory extended RU's record to 3-0 to start the season and was the team's second win over an opponent ranked in the top-12 this season. It was Rutgers' first win over UConn since 2001.

Carly Snarski scored her first career goal in the opening half for Rutgers, while Milena Redlingshoefer put home the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke in the second overtime session. Kerrie Burns had an assist on the first goal. Gianna Glatz made two saves in her first game action of the season. Overall, Rutgers controlled play for much of the contest, outshooting the Huskies 15-5 and holding a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The opening quarter was scoreless, although controlled by RU. Rutgers outshot UConn 3-0 and had the lone penalty corner of the frame.

Early in the second quarter, Rutgers broke through first. On the run, Kerrie Burns sent the ball into the circle and Snarksi knocked it in for a 1-0 lead. That advantage carried into halftime, as RU outshout UConn 7-0 in the first 30 minutes.

UConn's first shot of the day came off a corner opportunity in the third quarter, but Gianna Glatz sprawled out to make the save. With 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Huskies had another chance on a play coming down from the left side, but Glatz got down and stopped the attack.

Finally, UConn struck to equalize the game. After a long stretch pass from the backfield, Sophia Ugo put the ball in to even the game at 1-1. Sixty minutes would not be enough, and the teams headed to overtime. Through regulation, RU had controlled play with a 10-4 advantage in shots and 5-1 in corners.

The overtime sessions were hotly contested. In the second overtime, RU had a fast break, but a shot from Iris Langejans was saved. However, RU was awarded a penalty stroke, which Milena Redlingshoefer buried to give the Scarlet Knights the victory.

Rutgers' weekend of action is now complete. The Scarlet Knights play their home opener next, hosting No. 14 Syracuse next Friday at 2 p.m.

Postgame Notes

The victory marked the seventh top-10 win for the program in the past three seasons.
It marked the fifth time in the last four seasons that RU defeated a team ranked sixth or higher.
The win was the highest ranked road win under head coach Meredith Civico, tying a win at No. 6 Princeton in 2018.
Rutgers has 21 ranked wins since head coach Meredith Civico took over the program in 2012.
The win was RU's third all-time victory over UConn in 33 lifetime meetings. The program's previous win over the Huskies came in 2001.
After missing the first two games of the season while leading Team USA to a bronze medal at the Junior Pan American Games, returning First Team All-American Gianna Glatz made her season debut.
It was Rutgers' first overtime game since a 3-2 win over No. 4 Northwestern on April 11, 2021.
Snarksi, a junior, recorded the first goal of her career.
Redlingshoefer continues to hold the team lead in points (eight), while sharing the team lead in goals with Tayla Parkes and Lucy Bannatyne.
