PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior
Gabby Provenzano of Rutgers women's soccer was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Provenzano captained the backline to back-to-back shutout wins on the weekend, while adding a goal on the offensive side as well.
In the 6-0 win at Monmouth, Provenzano and the team limited the Hawks to just three shots overall in the match, none of which were on goal. The back also added her first goal of the year, scoring in the 44
th minute to give RU a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Sergeantsville, New Jersey, native went on to help the defense hold La Salle to only three shots overall as well. Dating back to 2019, Provenzano and the defense has held 32 straight opponents to single-digit shots on goal in each match.
Provenzano has posted a goal and an assist this season, bringing her career totals to four goals and three assists. This marks the third Big Ten weekly honor of her career, earning this recognition in 2019 and 2020 as well.
The honor marks the second straight week a Scarlet Knight has picked up a conference award, following Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week accolades for Frankie Tagliafferri and Freshman of the Week recognition for
Riley Tiernan last week. Â
The No. 9 ranked Scarlet Knights return to action on Thursday, Sept. 9, hosting in-state opponent Princeton for a 7 p.m. match at Yurcak Field.
