Gymnastics Defeats Maryland in Big Ten Opener

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Rutgers gymnastics defeated Maryland in its Big Ten Opener on Saturday afternoon in College Park. The Scarlet Knights posted a team score of 195.550, a top 10 mark in program history, to claim the victory over the Terrapins (194.925). 

RU recorded nine Top 3 finishes, led by Hannah Joyner with a first-place finish in the all-around. Joyner posted a career-high of 9.925 on floor and 9.925 on beam to highlight her outing.
 
 
TOP THREE FINISHERS
Rutgers claimed the top three spots on beam, as Joyner took first with a 9.925. Fifth-year senior Belle Huang posted a 9.900 to finish second, eclipsing the score in the event for the sixth time in her career. Sophomore Stephanie Zannella posted a 9.850 to finish third.
 
Huang and Joyner took first and second, respectively, on floor. Huang recorded a 9.950 for the second straight meet to match her career high and add the ninth score of 9.9 to her floor resume. Sophomore Emily Leese placed second on vault with a score of 9.825, while junior Jordyn Zieden-Weber finished third on bars with a career-best 9.800.  Freshman Mya Pringle debuted in the RU lineup on bars, tying for third with a 9.800 of her own. 
 
 
 
BEAM QUEEN
Hannah Joyner recorded a 9.925 on beam to take first in the event. It marked the 14th time in her career she eclipsed a 9.9 or higher on beam. Joyner, who also posted a career-high 9.925 on floor in the meet, has registered a 9.9 on all four events in her career. She owns the most 9.9 or higher results in program history, recording a total of 18 scores of 9.9 (14 times on beam, twice on floor, once on vault and once on bars).

Vault: Emily Leese, 9.825 - Second Place
Bars: Jordyn Zieden-Weber & Mya Pringle, 9.800 – Third Place
Beam: Hannah Joyner, 9.925 – First Place
Floor: Belle Huang, 9.950 – First Place
All-Around: Hannah Joyner, 39.375 – First Place
 
 
UP NEXT
Rutgers remains on the road with a trip to Kent State for a tri-meet with Cornell on Friday, January 28. The Scarlet Knights then match up with Ohio State on Sunday, January 30 in Columbus.
