Rivera Keeps Bonus Streak Alive at No. 3 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 14 Rutgers (12-4, 2-4) lost at No. 3 Michigan (6-1, 2-1), 32-8, on Sunday in Ann Arbor. No. 3 Sebastian Rivera (141) continued his bonus streak with his fifth consecutive tech fall, while Michael VanBrill (149) added a decision against the top-five Wolverines at the Crisler Center.

Through his first 18 matches of the season, Rivera is undefeated with all 18 victories coming by bonus. The Toms River native has collected five consecutive wins by tech fall and owns a nation-leading 11 tech falls heading into the final month of the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rutgers lost to top-eight individuals at 125 and 133 pounds, as Michigan took a quick 8-0 lead. But Rivera muscled a 19-4 tech fall over Chris Kim to get the Scarlet Knights on the board. Rivera landed two takedowns and a four-point tilt for a 9-1 advantage after one and collected 10 points in the second period for the tech fall. The win made it just 8-5 Michigan through three, as Rivera secured his 18th-straight bonus-point victory of the year.
  • VanBrill muscled a decision over Pat Nolan with a takedown in the first, as VanBrill left with a 4-1 decision. The win tied the dual at 8-8, while a tough loss by decision from Al DeSantis (RU) against No. 15 Will Lewan gave Michigan an 11-8 advantage at the break.
  • Rutgers would lose at 165, 174, and 184 pounds before the marquee match of the afternoon between No. 6 Greg Bulsak and No. 8 Patrick Brucki. Up 1-0 in the final period, Bulsak gave up a reversal but countered with an escape to force sudden victory. Brucki would land a takedown in sudden victory for the 3-1 decision.
  • A hard-fought loss from Boone McDermott (HWT) to 2021 national runner-up Mason Parris followed, as Michigan secured the 32-8 dual win.
UP NEXT
  • Rutgers gets a week off from dual action before it hosts Rider on Thursday, Feb. 3, and No. 6 Ohio State on Sunday, Feb. 6.
