Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Another Osh Brown Double-Double Cannot Overcome No. 17/15 Maryland

Brown’s 56th career double-double came via 10 points and 12 rebounds

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rutgers women's basketball (7-14, 0-9) got within one point in the third quarter at No. 17/15 Maryland (14-6, 6-3) before the Terrapins used a 10-0 run to push toward a 72-55 victory at the XFINITY Center on Thursday evening in a Big Ten contest.

Osh Brown notched her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 boards, and Destiny Marshall's 10 points were a Rutgers-high for the transfer in her second year with the program.

Sayawni Lassiter chipped in with six points on a pair of made three to go with a team-high four assists, while Jailyn Mason grabbed three steals and added seven points.

Rutgers held the No. 7 ranked scoring team in the country 10 points under their scoring average and forced them into 18 turnovers after averaging just 12 during the 2021-22 season. However, Rutgers' 26 turnovers erased that advantage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tyia Singleton had six points on 3-of-4 shooting with four rebounds in the first period, but Maryland's fast start led to a 19-9 lead after 10 minutes.
  • Rutgers opened the second on a 6-2 run, prompting a quick Maryland timeout. RU kept it within single-digits most of the second as Maryland went on cold stretch, but Rutgers couldn't capitalize with a stretch of five turnovers in two minutes. Following Osh Brown's bucket despite a triple-team and a foul in the final minute of the half, the Terps took a slim 30-26 lead into the break.
  • Rutgers fired away to open the third with three-pointers from Jailyn Mason and Lasha Petree before Awa Sidibe finished a brilliant pass from Mason on the fast break to cap a 10-2 run to bring Rutgers within one point at 37-36. Maryland answered with a 10-0 run, part of a 14-2 spurt to regain control.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Osh Brown secured her seventh double-double of the season, marking No. 56 of her career to extend her NCAA active lead. Her 12 rebounds upped her career total to 1,298, also the most among active NCAA players.
  • Destiny Marshall scored a season-high 10 points, and the most in a Rutgers uniform since joining the program before the 2020-21 season.
  • Rutgers has equaled or outrebounded opponents in 18 of 21 games this season with an average margin of +6.5, which ranks third in the Big Ten.
  • Rutgers forced Maryland into 18 turnovers after the Terps averaged just 12.0 per game this season.
  • Double-figure scoring career marks: Brown (80th), Marshall (1st).
  • Holding Maryland, the nation's No. 7 ranked offense and the best in the Big Ten, 10 points under their season average, Rutgers has held 37 of its last 40 opponents under their scoring averages.
  • The Starting 5 of Sayawni Lassiter, Jailyn Mason, Lasha Petree, Tyia Singleton, and Osh Brown took the floor for the fourth time this season as a starting unit.
  • Rutgers is now 12-29 all-time against Maryland, including a 1-11 mark as Big Ten regular season opponents.
