PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's basketball (7-15, 0-10) fell to Michigan State (12-8, 6-3) by a score of 61-45 on Sunday afternoon at Jersey Mike's Arena.
The Scarlet Knights came out firing with 72 percent shooting in the opening quarter, leading by 12 at one point and totaling 18 points in the period. But the Spartans found a quick answer in the second, outscoring the Scarlet Knights, 16-5, and leading the rest of the way.
Lasha Petree paced Rutgers with 15 points on the strength of three 3-pointers, while
Shug Dickson's 13 and
Osh Brown's 10 added to the offense.
- RU started 7-of-9 from the field to storm out to a 16-4 lead midway through the first, but the Spartans had a quick answer with a 9-0 run to shrink the deficit. Rutgers led 16-14
- MSU stretched the long run to 19-2 bridging quarters and took its first lead of the game. Lasha Petree stayed hot, starting 3-of-3 from three-point range for 11 first-half points, but the Spartans finished the second on an 8-0 spurt and took a 31-23 advantage into the locker room.
- Both teams managed short runs in the third, but it was the Spartans' 6-0 rally midway through the period that gave the visitors its first double-digit lead at 40-29. A Shug Dickson three and buckets by Osh Brown and Jailyn Mason kept it close as the Spartans led 45-37 heading into the fourth.
- Awa Sidibe banked in a three and, after a stop, Brown followed with a good step-back jumper in the paint for a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to five at 49-44. MSU answered with a 5-0 run of its own and pushed the lead back to double-digits with two minutes to play at 56-45. Michigan State ended the game on a 7-0 run, a 12-1 rally over the final 4:30.
- Lasha Petree made 3+ three-point field goals for the fourth time this season. She leads the Scarlet Knights with 26 threes in 2021-22.
- Holding Michigan State 14 points under their season average, Rutgers has held 38 of its last 41 opponents under their scoring averages.
- Double-figure scoring career marks: Brown (81st), Petree (77th), Dickson (46th).
- The Starting 5 of Shug Dickson, Sayawni Lassiter, Lasha Petree, Tyia Singleton, and Osh Brown took the floor for the sixth time this season as a starting unit.
- Rutgers is now 6-6 all-time against Michigan State, including a 4-5 mark as Big Ten regular season opponents, and 3-2 at home.
