Women's Basketball Pulls Away to Best Saint Peter's

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's basketball (7-2) earned the 57-39 decision over Saint Peter's (1-5) on Sunday.  

Nene Ndiaye, Imani Lester and Janae Walker all led the way with 12 points each. Lester and Imani Walker also paced the team with seven rebounds apiece.  

The Scarlet Knights never relinquished the lead, going on an 11-0 run in the final quarter of play and taking a game-high 18-point lead.  

How it Happened 

  • Rutgers got out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a layup and a three-point play from Imani Lester.  
  • Zachara Perkins and Antonia Bates added buckets around Saint Peter's first score of the day, 9-3.  
  • Faith Blackstone and Lester added scores to make it a 10-point difference with just over 4:30 to play.  
  • Both teams added two more points before the final minute of action to keep the gap, 15-5. RU hit one more free throw but the Peacocks sank two, making the score 16-7 at the end of the opening period.  
  • Saint Peter's began the second quarter with six consecutive points to lessen the deficit to three points, 16-13.  
  • Nene Ndiaye put an end to the opponent's run with a three-pointer at 6:42.  
  • However, SPU got right back to it on offense with another four in a row to keep it close, 19-17, at the 4:34 media timeout.  
  • Janae Walker got the Scarlet Knights back on the board with a free throw and Nene Ndiaye followed up with a jumper with just over 2:32 to play.  
  • RU continued the momentum, ending the second quarter with a 7-0 run, thanks to points from Lester and Walker. Rutgers went into the locker room ahead, 26-17.  
  • Walker got the offense going in the third with a layup before Saint Peter's called their first timeout at the 9:04 mark, 28-17.  
  • The Peacocks hit a three with just over eight minutes on the clock, but Nene Ndiaye matched the points with a deep shot of her own.  
  • Saint Peter's netted a jumper and a free throw to make the score 31-23, with 5:35 left to play.  
  • Perkins countered with a contested layup, but SPU quickly answered with a layup of its own.  
  • Kaylah Ivey pulled up for the jumper to give Rutgers a 10-point advantage, 35-25, as the Peacocks used their second timeout with 3:31 to play.  
  • Saint Peter's netted another three and tacked on two free throws while Nene Ndiaye added a layup to close the gap to seven points, 37-30.  
  • With 1:14 to go, SPU cashed in on a free throw, but Ivey quickly answered on the other end with a jumper at the top.  
  • The opposition hit one more shot at the line before the end of the third quarter with Rutgers still on top, 39-32.  
  • SPU started the final 10 minutes with a layup to lessen the difference, 39-34.  
  • Before another Peacocks timeout, Perkins and Ivey combined for four points to go back up by double digits, 44-34.  
  • Nene Ndiaye and Ivy kept a 9-0 run going out of the stop. After RU's first timeout, Perkins extended the stretch, 11-0.  
  • SPU put an end to the run with 2:42 to play and the teams traded scores until another Rutgers timeout at 1:10. The Scarlet Knights stayed in control, 55-39. 
  • RU hit one last shot before the buzzer to come out on top, 57-39.  
 

Knights Notes   

  • Nene Ndiaye has reached double-digits in nine straight contests and 20+ three times. She paces RU with 16.9 points per game.  
  • Imani Lester's 12 points marks her sixth performance with 10+ points and her third in a row.  
  • Kaylah Ivey also recorded 12 points, her first double-digit performance since the team played FDU (Nov. 16).  
  • Both Nene Ndiaye and Ivey hit two threes. Ivey has had two or more shots from deep in seven contests this season.  
  • Rutgers beat Saint Peter's off the glass, 41-27. RU is 7-0 when it has the advantage on the boards.  
  • RU held SPU is 39 points, tied for its second lowest total this campaign.  
  • The team kept the Peacocks to just seven points in the first and fourth quarters, the sixth single digit period by an opponent this slate. 
  • The Scarlet Knights brought in 15 offensive rebounds, their sixth outing with 15 or more off the offensive glass.
