LINCOLN, Neb. – Rutgers women's basketball (7-16, 0-11) held high-flying Nebraska (16-4, 5-4) to 28 percent shooting on Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena, but fell 50-38 in a defensive Big Ten battle.
As the Scarlet Knights' defense stifled the Huskers,
Osh Brown and
Tyia Singleton led a comeback charge from down 13 to a two-point deficit at 8:56 left in the fourth quarter following a 10-2 Rutgers run before Nebraska responded with a 13-0 spurt over a seven-minute span to win their third consecutive game.
Osh Brown grabbed another double-double, her eighth of the year and 57
th of her career, with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Tyia Singleton led the rebounding effort with 13, tying a career-high, while adding seven points.
Nebraska, the second ranked rebounding team in the conference, won the battle of the boards, 45-38, marking the most rebounds recorded by a Rutgers opponent in 2021-22. The Huskers turned 22 RU miscues into an 18-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
- Both teams started cold with RU beginning 0-of-7 and Nebraska going 2-of-10. The Huskers held a 16-10 lead after one.
- Defense continued into the second with both teams shooting 20 percent in the frame. Tyia Singleton converted a three-point play and grabbed five boards in the period to help keep Nebraska away from second-chance points. A 10-0 Nebraska run from the end of the first to midway through the second had the home team up 23-10.
- Osh Brown scored six points during an 10-2 Rutgers run over a four-minute span to shrink the Husker lead to 33-28.
- Shug Dickson's basket at the end of the third launched momentum into the final period, where a 6-0 rally had Rutgers within one possession before back-to-back Husker three-pointers to start a 13-0 answer to retake a double-digit lead at 49-34.
- Osh Brown recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 13 points and 11 rebounds, marking the 57th of her career – the NCAA active lead. Her NCAA active career-leading rebound total increased to 1,316.
- Osh Brown matched her career-high with four steals, the seventh time with four steals in her career.
- Tyia Singleton tied a career-high with 13 rebounds, last produced against Ohio State last season on March 5.
- Nebraska came into the game ranked seventh in the nation in scoring average (81.2) before managing 50 points against Rutgers, 11th in three-point field goal shooting (.370) before shooting .194 (6-of-31) against RU, and 15th in field goal percentage (.462) before getting cold at .279 vs. the Scarlet Knights.
- Holding Nebraska 31 points under their season average, Rutgers has held 39 of its last 42 opponents under their average scoring marks.
- Double-figure scoring career marks: Brown (82nd)
- True freshman Kierra Sanderlin made her first appearance since Dec. 18 against Wagner.
- The Starting 5 of Sayawni Lassiter, Jailyn Mason, Lasha Petree, Awa Sidibe, and Osh Brown took the floor for the first time this season as a starting unit, the 12th different variation of a Scarlet Knights starting lineup in 2021-22.
- Rutgers is now 6-5 all-time against Nebraska, including a 5-5 mark as Big Ten regular season opponents, and 1-4 in Lincoln.
