Gymnastics Opens 2022 in Quad Meet at No. 2 Florida

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers gymnastics opens the 2022 season with a trip to No. 2 Florida on Friday, Jan. 7. The road quad meet features host UF, Northern Illinois and Texas Woman's. A live stream will begin at 6:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network+ and will be accompanied by live results. Follow @RUGymnastics on twitter for live score updates from the meet.
Led by fourth year head coach Umme Salim-Beasley, the Scarlet Knights return 20 letterwinners to the squad while welcoming nine newcomers. The team will be led this year by captains Belle Huang, Hannah Joyner and Stephanie Zannella. Among the returners, Huang is back for her fifth-year of eligibility. She joins the 2022 senior class of Mia Betancourt, Abigail Karolewski, and Sage Littlejohn.
A total of nine newcomers join the program in 2022, including eight freshmen and a sophomore transfer. The group enters collegiate gymnastics having been tabbed a top 25 ranked 2021-22 recruiting class by College Gym News.
Freshman Elia Aird and junior Hannah Joyner of Rutgers have been named 2022 Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch. Last season, Joyner made history as the third Rutgers gymnast to compete at Nationals, becoming the first to qualify to the highest stage on beam. The then-sophomore also became the first Scarlet Knight to have reached a 9.9 on all four events, posting career bests of 9.950 on beam, 9.900 on bars, beam and floor. She owns a 39.450 career-high score in all-around.
Aird begins her first year as a Scarlet Knight hailing from Winter Garden, Florida. She joins the program as a JO National Qualifier, having competed in club gymnastics from 2008-2021. Aird graduated in the top 3% of her class at Windermere High School. She will compete all-around for Rutgers
The 2021 season was one for the record books as Rutgers produced its highest ever finish and score at the Big Ten Championships, two NCAA Regional qualifiers, a National qualifier, two First Team All-Big Ten honorees, 14 Academic All-Big Ten recipients, 19 WCGA Scholastic All-Americans, and much more.
In addition to a record-setting Big Ten Championships, Rutgers posted the highest road score (195.975), the second highest beam score (49.275), the third best team score (195.975) ever, and the fourth best home and ninth best overall score (195.525) in program history. The Scarlet Knights are set for six away meets and four home meets, as well as the Big Five meet and Big Ten Championships. Following its opener on the road, Rutgers is set for its first home meet on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the newly named Jersey Mike's Arena. For the full 2022 schedule, click here.
