Alvarez Set for U23 World Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sammy Alvarez will represent Team Puerto Rico and Rutgers wrestling this weekend at the U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. The 2020 NWCA All-American will compete in the 65 kg freestyle division when wrestling begins on Friday.

A 2020 NCAA qualifier and NWCA Second Team All-American, Alvarez finished last season with an 8-2 overall record and a 7-1 mark in dual action. Alvarez, who has been ranked as high as No. 5 nationally during his collegiate career, owns 37 career victories "On the Banks", which includes a 26-10 record during his true freshman season in 2019-20.
Rutgers returns three All-Americans – Alvarez, John Poznanski and Jackson Turley – as well as eight NCAA qualifiers to this season's team. Under head coach Scott Goodale, the Scarlet Knights finished the 2021-22 season with its most dual wins (16) since 2012-13 and its highest final ranking in the NWCA Coaches Poll (14) since 2017. RU qualified seven to the 2022 NCAA Championships – the most since 2017 – and had all participants score at the national tournament. Greg Bulsak (197) and Sebastian Rivera (141) added All-America honors to make it seven consecutive seasons with multiple All-Americans at NCAAs. With his bronze medal, Rivera became the fourth individual to secure a top-three finish at nationals in program history.
The Scarlet Knights open their 2022-23 dual season on Friday, November 11 against Clarion at the College Ave. Gym.
