Scarlet Knights enter the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 7 seed at No. 2 Northwestern on Sun., Oct. 30
EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 14 Rutgers women's soccer (13-3-2, 5-3-2) fell to an 86th minute game-winner to drop the regular season finale, 1-0, at No. 6 Michigan State (14-1-3-, 9-0-1) on Sunday afternoon.
The Scarlet Knights finish in a four-way tie for fourth place in the Big Ten with 17 points along with Ohio State, Nebraska, and Penn State, but finished at the bottom of that tiebreaker due to common opponent points in conference play (against Michigan and Indiana). Rutgers will be the No. 7 seed at the Big Ten Tournament and will visit 2-seed Northwestern in the quarterfinals on Sun., Oct. 30.
After 85 minutes of scoreless soccer by the Rutgers defense, the Spartans' Lauren DeBeau netted the lone goal of the contest with 4:53 remaining in the regular season to spoil Rutgers' potential point on the road.
Rutgers' defensive assertiveness allowed just three of Michigan State's 11 shots on target, coming up with five blocked shots in the process. It was the 10th time this season Rutgers allowed three or less shots on goal in a contest.
The Scarlet Knight attack managed eight shot attempts and three on target, one apiece for Allison Lynch, Riley Tiernan, and Giana Romano.
