PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers wrestling enjoyed a strong showing on Sunday at the Princeton Open. Three unattached Scarlet Knights –
Joseph Olivieri (141),
Andrew Clark (157) and
John Poznanski (184) – secured individual titles, as 10 RU student-athletes placed during the all-day tournament at Jadwin Gym.
Olivieri defeated Ty Linsenbigler (Lock Haven) by 9-3 decision in his title match, Clark picked up a 3-0 decision against teammate
Al DeSantis (157) to win his bracket, and Poznanski defeated Nate Dugan (Princeton), 7-0, to claim the 184-pound title.
Both
Dylan Shawver (125) and
Dean Peterson (125) impressed in their high-profile matches against 2022 national runner-up Patrick Glory (Princeton). In the semifinals, Peterson landed two takedowns on Glory, including one in the final seconds of the match to tie the score at 5-5. However, Glory would advance thanks to riding time. Shawver then faced Glory in the championship match and produced three reversal for a 6-5 lead midway through the second period. Both would trade points before Glory exited with a 11-9 decision.
Other unattached wrestlers who placed included
Connor O'Neill (fourth) and
Nico Messina (fifth). In attached action,
PJ Casale (HWT) took third, while
Luke Gayer (165) placed sixth.
