| ABOUT THE SCARLET KNIGHTS |
- The Scarlet Knights welcome back 17 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's youthful squad that played a Big Ten only schedule. The roster is comprised of two graduate students/seniors, 10 juniors, seven sophomores and a trio of rookies that will be battled tested with six nonconference tournaments before setting off on the always tough Big Ten slate. Much of the roster will be enjoying a full traditional schedule after the CoVID-19 pandemic saw Rutgers play only 24 games and five weekends of ball in 2020 and a 2021 schedule that featured a conference-only slate.
- Rutgers opened the 2022 season last week in Mexico at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge going 2-3 and having faced two top 10 programs. The Scarlet Knights got 2-1 and 6-2 victories over Lamar while dropping a 6-3 contest to Memphis as the Tigers overcame a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Rutgers also faced No. 8 Arkansas and No. 7 Washington the first week of the season.
- Two Scarlet Knights landed on the Puerto Vallarta Challenge All-Tournament Team - Gabrielle Callaway & Jaden Vickers. Callaway, a graduate student left fielder, finished the tournament hitting .400 with six hits and four RBIs. She was 3-for-4 with a double and her 13th career doubles in RU's 6-2 win over Lamar. Callaway also had two RBIs and two stolen bases against Memphis. Vickers, meanwhile, pitched 19.0 innings with a 2.95 ERA and pair of wins over the Cardinals where just gave up just three hits. The junior lefthander struck out 11 batters, including six Tigers in her 2022 debut, and held the opposition to a .167 average at the plate.
- In the 6-2 victory over Lamar last Saturday, Rutgers churned out 10 hits, including six extra-base hits with a trio of triples. The three triples marked the most by the Scarlet Knights since collecting two in a 12-8 victory over Hampton on March 2, 2018.
- Among the 10 hits against the Cardinals, was the first career home run by sophomore Lauren Punk. Punk took the first pitch in her first career start over the fence to centerfield for the first of RU's six runs. The sophomore who got the nod at first base also added a triple at her next at-bat.
