MADISON, Wisc. – There were another two school records broken and two podium finishes for the Rutgers women's swimming & diving team on day two of the 2022 Big Ten Championships.
Graduate student
Abigail Knapton returned to the podium on 1M taking sixth place overall while the 400 medley relay team set a new RU benchmark in their eighth-place finish.
Additionally, freshman
Sofia Lobova won the C finals of the 50 free racing to another new Rutgers record.
Thru two days of competition, the Scarlet Knights remain in seventh place with 190 points and have totaled four podium finishes and five school records.
- Abigail Knapton scored 311.00 during 1M finals to sixth finish overall. She was sixth after prelims qualifying for finals after totaling 286.10.
- Jenna Douglass reached the consolation finals on 1M where she took seventh with a score of 244.65. She finished 16th during prelims with a 256.90.
- A Scarlet Knight relay went back to the podium for a third time with an eighth-place school record-breaking performance in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of Alice Scarabelli, Tina Celik, Sofia Lobova and Sofia Chichaikina registered a time of 3:36.37.
- Scarabelli's leadoff time of 53.29 moved her up to fifth all-time at Rutgers in the 100 back.
- Both Sofia Lobova and Sofia Chichaikina logged identical prelim times of 22.65 to reach the C finals of the 50 free. Lobova was out in front to win the C final in a time of 22.30 for the Rutgers record, while Chichaikina was sixth in the heat clocking in at 22.63 to tie for the sixth-fastest time in school history.
- Rutgers also had another top 10 time in the 50 free. Eleonora Trentin was .10 seconds off qualifying for finals but her time of 22.96 was the sixth-fastest time in the record book.
- Katie Dougherty also picked up a season-best 2:06.11 in the prelims of the 200 IM.
- Cat Salladin and Natalie Schick both earned season bests in the prelims of the 500 free. Schick captured a time of 5:05.66 while Salladin raced to the wall in 4:54.83 a mere .30 seconds away from advancing to the evening finals.
- Sofia Lobova reset the 50 free record of 22.41 that was captured by former Scarlet Knight and Olympian Elinah Phillip during the final of the 2020 Big Ten Championships.
- The 400 medley squad topped the previous record of 3:37.13 set by Vera Koprivova, Rachel Stoddard, Francesca Stoppa and Clare Lawlor in 2017.
- Sofia Lobova and Sofia Chichaikina both captured NCAA B cuts in the 50 free. It was Lobova's third B cut of the year having also registered B cut in the 100 free and 100 fly at the Big Al Invite in December. It was also Chichaikina's third B cut of the season after capturing the standard yesterday in the 200 free during the 800 free relay and in the 200 fly at Nebraska in late January.
- The 400 medley relay's eighth-place finish marked the third time the Scarlet Knights have reached the podium at the Big Ten Championships in the event.
