Women’s Hoops Flies with No. 21/22 Iowa in 87-78 Setback

Scarlet Knights produce their best second-half performance of the season while keeping it close with the nationally-ranked Hawkeyes

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's basketball (9-19, 2-14) produced its highest-scoring second half of the season with 51 points, keeping pace with the No. 3 ranked offense in the country, the Iowa Hawkeyes (19-7, 13-4), who prevailed, 87-78, at Jersey Mike's Arena on Thursday evening.

The Scarlet Knights battled late into the game, trailing by just three points at 81-78 with 1:02 remaining after Shug Dickson scored four consecutive points in a Rutgers run. The Hawkeyes answered with a bucket and got a stop before finishing the game from the free throw line. Iowa's Caitlin Clark scored 16 points in the final quarter to keep Iowa in the lead.

Dickson led Rutgers with a season-high 19 points on 9-of-18 shooting with four assists and three steals. Lasha Petree and Jailyn Mason both made three 3-point field goals on the way to 13 points apiece, while Osh Brown added 12 points and fell one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.

Iowa needed a 60% field goal shooting performance for the nine-point win, while Rutgers outrebounded the Hawkeyes, 35-28, including 17 offensive rebounds leading to a 15-2 advantage in second-chance points. Rutgers also won the turnover battle, outscoring Iowa, 16-10, on points off miscues.

  • Jailyn Mason, Sayawni Lassiter, and Victoria Morris made buckets while the defense stopped Iowa during a 6-0 run to pull within seven points early in the third.
