Softball Splits Day Two At The Spring Games

LEESBURG, Fla. – Rutgers softball split a pair of games on day two of The Spring Games on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights extended its win streak to eight games with a 4-3 extra-inning victory over FGCU, but had the streak halted in game two with a 10-7 setback to North Florida.

RU enters the final game of the weekend on Sunday at 10-4 overall.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • The Scarlet Knights won their eighth-consecutive contest with their third extra-inning game of the year and second-straight game in extras.
  • Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Maddie Lawson went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
  • Payton Lincavage was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, which included driving in the winning run in extra innings along with a run.
  • Kyleigh Sand was also 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Lefthander Jaden Vickers improved to 6-0 on the season tossing all eight innings with eight strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Maddie Lawson led off the bottom of the second on a single to short and scored on a Taylor Fawcett sacrifice fly to right to put RU up 1-0.
  • Rutgers added a pair of runs in the sixth to go ahead 3-0. Payton Lincavage belted an RBI triple to center field and came home on a Lawson base hit to left.
  • FGCU tied the game up with three runs on three hits at the bottom of the inning. Cana Davis knocked in the Eagles' first run on a double to center, Reddy Davenport sent in a run on a sacrifice fly to left and Abbey Thomas put away an RBI single all in a row to knot the score at 3-3.
  • Heading into extra innings, Lincavage came up clutch in the eighth delivering an RBI single to center to score Kobie Hura for the winning run.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • The victory upped Rutgers' win streak to eight marking the longest win streak by the Scarlet Knights since 1994. RU won 10 games between April 5 and April 18, 1994.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • The win streak came to a halt as North Florida overcame a 5-0 deficit and took the lead in the sixth to snap RU's longest string of consecutive victories in 28 seasons.
  • Gabrielle Callaway was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Taylor Fawcett went 2-for-4 with one score and one run batted in.
  • Kyleigh Sand added two runs and an RBI with four other Scarlet Knights scoring in the setback.
  • Ashley Hitchcock got the start inside the circle while Jaden Vickers finished out the final two innings picking up the loss.
THE RUNDOWN
  • The Scarlet Knights went through the order in the bottom of the second with five runs on five hits. The Taylors - Taylor Fawcett and Taylor Lane – each had RBIs singles to kick off the scoring followed by Kyleigh Sand adding a sacrifice fly to right to put RU up 3-0. Payton Lincavage posted her second triple of the day for two more runs and a 5-0 Rutgers advantage.
  • The Ospreys got onto the scoreboard in the fourth on a pair of runs off a home run by Kayla McGory and a triple from Logan Jackson.
  • Gabrielle Callaway added a run back with a single to score Sand and put Rutgers in front 6-2 at the end of four.
  • North Florida, however, generated four runs in the top of the fifth to tie up the ballgame at 6-6. The Ospreys got a McGory RBI single and went on to get a sac fly from Shannon Glover and a two-RBI double by Hayley Bejarano with two outs.
  • North Florida took over the lead the following inning. In the sixth, a fielding error on an Osprey bunt allowed two runs to score and Glover came up with a single to short giving North Florida a 9-6 advantage.
  • Rutgers narrowed the gap in the sixth. Callaway scored Sand again, this time on a double to left field, as the Scarlet Knights trailed 9-7 heading into the final inning.
  • The Osprey tacked on another run in the seventh on a double by Abi Annett to center.

The Rutgers softball team wraps up its trip at The Spring Games on Sunday meeting Cornell at 11:30 a.m. The game will be streamed by FloSoftball.
