ORLANDO, Fla. –
Chloe Timberg led Rutgers track and field in its outdoor season opener as she claimed the school, meet and facility record in the pole vault, earning one of nine event wins at the Black & Gold Invitational on the campus of UCF.
Â
"This was a great start to the season," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Bobby Farrell. "We pride ourselves on being a complete team and it was great to see record setting and top-10 performances across the board. The throwers, distance runners, sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers all performed at a high level. The majority either set personal records or had their best opening performance ever. The coaching staff is doing a great job developing them. We get a chance now to get some solid training in before we compete again in two weeks."
Â
Timberg, the indoor school record holder and Big Ten silver medalist, made her outdoor pole vault debut on Friday, setting the stage for an outstanding opening weekend for the Scarlet Knights. The freshman won the event, clearing the bar at 4.40m (14' 5.25"), eclipsing the previous school record by almost two feet. The performance also set the Black & Gold Invitational record and was the UCF Track Complex facility record.
Â
Â
The Scarlet Knights claimed a total of nine event wins with the women's squad earning five victories, including a pair of relays, while the men's team add four.
Billy Hill and
Alex Carlson each posted two separate event wins to highlight the weekend. Hill won the 800 (1:50.60) and 1,500 (3:44.98) with Carlson earning wins on the women's side in the 1,500 (4:24.56) and 3,000 (9:44.61).
Â
Joshua Mather recorded a throw of 68.10m (223' 5") in the javelin and
Patrick Walsh ran a time of 14:58.85 in the 5,000 to give the men their other two event wins on the weekend. The women's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams led a dominant effort on the track, picking up victories in both events.
Â
Sydney Hawkins,
Shanelle Colmon,
Ajae Alvarez-Tyler and
Dennisha Page combined to run a winning time of 44.95 in the 4x100. Alvarez-Tyler joined
Charlee Crawford,
Shelby Whetstone and
Reanda Richards to win the 4x400 in 3:40.23.
Â
The Scarlet Knights earned 24 top-five finishes on the weekend, including 18 that were in the top three. Rutgers earned runner-up finishes in the men's discus (
Adam Hunt), women's javelin (
Alexa Gardner), high jump (
Alivia Ash), 100-meter (
Dennisha Page) and 2,000-meter Steeplechase (

Â
Â
The Scarlet Knights will next compete in two weeks, sending the some of the squad to Gainsville for the Florida Relays, while others will travel to Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitational.
