Softball Drops Series Finale With Minnesota

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – It was Minnesota taking the series against the Rutgers softball team on Sunday afternoon in a 10-3 win over the Scarlet Knights.

The Golden Gophers used six home runs to score nine of its 10 runs.

For the second day in a row, sophomore Kobie Hura would not allow the visitors to run-rule her squad adding a Rutgers home run in the bottom of the fifth extending play for the Scarlet Knights.

The setback dropped Rutgers to 22-12 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten.
 
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Kyleigh Sand extended her hitting streak to eight games, the longest of the season for a Scarlet Knight. The sophomore scored two runs going 2-for-4 on the day with a double.
  • Graduate student Gabrielle Callaway was 1-for-2, including an RBI double, marking seven consecutive games with a hit.
  • Both Sand and Callaway have reached base safely in the last 15-straight contests.
  • Sophomore Kobie Hura recorded her second home run of the season. Leading off the bottom of the fifth with RU trailing 10-2, she hit a solo shot to left field to continue play.
  • Ashley Hitchcock dropped to 9-9 on the year throwing 2.1 innings in the start. Vickers was inside the circle for 2.0 innings with both Scarlet Knights giving up five runs on four hits with a trio of Golden Gophers fanned. Georgia Ingle finished out the final 2.2 innings allowing two hits.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Rutgers was the first squad onto the scoreboard with a pair of hits in the bottom of the first. Kyleigh Sand led off with a single and scored off a Gabrielle Callaway double just past the outstretched glove of the Golden Gopher left fielder.
  • Minnesota took a 2-1 lead in the second. Megan Dray put away the first Golden Gopher home run of the contest with a solo shot and Sydney Strelow reached home on a passed ball.
  • The Golden Gophers added three more runs off home runs by Sara Kinch and Strelow in the third.
  • Sand was able to sneak in a run in the bottom of the inning. The Scarlet Knight reached base on a double and scored as Callaway was in a rundown attempting to steal second base for RU to trail 5-2.
  • Minnesota continued its hitting prowess with a two-run dinger from Natalie DenHartog in the fourth and furthered its advantage with back-to-back long balls by Makenna Dowell and Kayla Chavez for three runs in the fifth and a 10-1 lead.
  • Kobie Hura, who had extended play in Saturday's 11-7 setback in game two of the series with a three-run home run with two outs in the fifth, kept the game going when she came to the plate in the fifth. Leading off the bottom of the inning with RU trailing 10-2, she hit the ball over the fence in left-center.
MIINESOTA SERIES KNIGHT NOTES
  • Gabrielle Callaway finished out the three-game series hitting .714 (5-for-7) including three doubles and a home run. She collected three runs and seven RBIs.
  • Kyleigh Sand batted .556 (5-for-9) on the weekend with five runs scored.

The Rutgers softball team has its first mid-week nonconference contest of the year hosting Monmouth at the Rutgers Softball Complex on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
