PRINCETON, N.J. – Rutgers track and field bounced back from a challenging weather weekend during its the previous meet to turn in several outstanding performances at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton. Competing under clearer skies and with warmer weather, the Scarlet Knights broke two school records, recorded four event wins and collected 26 finishes in the top five on April 15 and 16.
The distance team got things started on day one of competition as
Billy Hill broke the men's 1,500-meter record and
Lou Mialhe reset the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase record which she previously held. Hill ran a time of 3:44.54 to finish third overall and claim a nearly 40-year-old record that was also set in Princeton in 1982. Mialhe placed second and established a new mark of 10:22.68 in the steeplechase for the fifth time in her career, shaving eight seconds off of her previous time (10:30.99).
The Scarlet Knights won three field events and one on the track to cap an all-around solid team performance. Freshmen
Chloe Timberg and
Sincere Robinson continue shine in their respective events as Timberg won the women's pole vault, clearing a height of 4.35m (14'3.25"). Robinson was victorious in the long jump, recording a leap of 7.86m (25' 9.5").
Jacqueline Simmons added a victory in the women's long jump as she posted a jump of 5.80m (19' 0.5"), while Chris Hill won the Saturday section of the 1,500-meter with a time of 3:51.60.
Rutgers benefited from a balance effort with 26 top-five finishes, including six performances in the top-three on the men's side and 11 from the women's team. In addition to the four event wins, the Scarlet Knights finished runner up in eight events.
On the track, the men's program added a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with Robinson,
Louis Akpadago,
James Bivins and
Nadale Buntin combining to run a time of 40.56.
Kyle Lipscomb led the Scarlet Knights in the throws as he placed second (57.08m – 187' 3") in the discus and third in the hammer throw (61.43m – 201' 6").
The women's sprint team set the tone for the Scarlet Knights on the track as
Dennisha Page placed second in the 100-meter with a time of 11.53, while
Shanelle Colmon took third in the 200-meter in 24.77.
Charlee Crawford took second in the 400-meter, running a time of 54.48.
Colmon and Page joined
Sydney Hawkins and Icicsys Sadler to finish second in the 4x100 with a time of 45.42.
Michelle Coyotl-Varela placed second in the 10,000-meter with a time of 36:31.37.
Alexa Gardner added a second-place finish in the javelin as she posted a throw of 47.41m (155' 6").
Jasmine Van Note took third in the shot put with a throw of 15.15m (49' 8.5"), while
Claudine Smith was third in the triple jump, recording a leap of 12.03m (39' 5.75").
Rutgers will return to action for the USC Open on the campus of South Carolina from Friday, April 22 through Saturday, April 23. It marks the third meet hosted at an SEC member for the Scarlet Knights after competing at Florida and Tennessee earlier in the season.
