COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The host Maryland Terps took two from Rutgers softball on Tuesday with a 10-7 victory in game one and edging the Scarlet Knights 6-1 in game two.
Maryland 10, Rutgers 7
- Gabrielle Callaway took a 2-2 pitch to deep center field for the 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
- Maryland, however, went up big in the bottom of the inning scoring seven runs off four hits. An error allowed the Terps' first run to score and the hosts added on off a fielder's choice and a stolen base. The scoring continued with a Taylor Okada RBI single and Haley Ellefson two-run home run.
- Rutgers whittled down its deficit to two runs in the top of the fifth. The bases were loaded when a wild pitch allowed Taylor Fawcett to score and an RBI single from Kobie Hura brought home Kiersten Withstandley. The Scarlet Knights had runners on all three bases again when Payton Lincavage came to the plate two batters later to deliver an RBI single. Â While RU was unable to plate a run off of Callaway's at-bat, the Scarlet Knights were still all aboard when Maddie Lawson was hit by a pitch to drive in another run and trailed 7-5.
- The Terps added insurance in the sixth as a Jaeda McFarland double and singles from Mackense Greico and Okada each drove in runs and upped Maryland's advantage to 10-5.
- RU led off the top of the seventh with the top of the batting order all generating base hits to load the bases. Fawcett connected on a two-run double to center narrowing RU's deficit but it would be as close as the Scarlet Knights would get.
