GAINSVILLE, Fla. and STANFORD, Calif. – Rutgers track and field closed out the weekend at a pair of meets, competing at the Florida Relays and Stanford Invitational on April 2.
Jasmine Van Note established a school record in the shot put for the second time this season, setting a new mark at the Florida Relays. The Scarlet Knights also posted 15 personal records.
"We wanted to get out there and compete against some of the best in the country," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Bobby Farrell. "The distance group did a great job at Stanford and despite some weather challenges, the sprints, jumps and throws competed very well in Florida. We've been able to get more NCAA qualifiers these first two meets than we've ever had this early in the season which was a goal of ours.
"Primarily, these early meets are opportunities to practice what we've been training in competition and continue to learn how to execute under pressure, excitement or nervousness. This allows us to go back to practice and know what we want to work on for the following week. There is no better way to learn how to compete under pressure than to compete under pressure."
Van Note entered the season as the school record holder in both the indoor and outdoor shot put. She broke her previous mark in the outdoor season opener at the Black and Gold Invitational and added a new distance at the Florida Relays with a mark of 15.64m (51' 3.75"). Her distance was good for a sixth-place finish.
After posting five finishes in the top-five on Friday at the Florida Relays, the Scarlet Knights added another pair of top-five marks during Saturday's competition.
Adam Hunt took fifth in the discus with a throw of 51.74m (169' 9"), while
Dennisha Page placed fifth in the 100-meter with a time of 11.73.
