AURORA, Colo. – Rising senior Leigha Devine defended her title at the 2022 Colorado Match Play Championship over the weekend at the CommonGround Golf Course and Broadmoor Golf Club in Aurora, Colorado. Devine became the first individual to win back-to-back CGA Match Play events since Wendy Werley in 1988 and 1989.
Devine went 6-0 during match play and defeated Morgan Riley 5 and 4 in a scheduled 36-hole title match. Devine never trailed during Saturday's final round, leading by as many as five throughout play.
"It means a ton," Devine said. "It's awesome to see my game grow from year to year and get better every year. To accomplish this on such a great championship golf course — where all the greats have won (including Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam) — was a pleasure. This place is in mint condition. It was a great week."
Devine has shined on the amateur circuit, as the Windsor, Colorado, native was named the 2021 Colorado Golf Association's Women's Player of the Year back in November. Devine captured both the CGA Match Play and Stroke Play titles as well as qualified for the 2021 U.S. Women's Open Championship last summer.
A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and 2021 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Devine wrapped up her spring collegiate season with a 75.5 scoring average - the fifth-lowest scoring average in program history - over six events. Devine tied for 43rd at the 2022 Big Ten Championship, carded three top-20 individual finishes and produced a top-10 result at Mercer's Lake Oconee Invitational.
