Men's Basketball to Host Maryland on Thursday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Coming off a historic victory at No. 1 Purdue on Monday night, the Scarlet Knights are back at home to host Maryland. The game tips off at 6:30 pm on Big Ten Network and airs on WCBS 880 AM on the radio dial.

THE SERIES
Rutgers and Maryland are meeting for the 20th time lifetime, with the Terps leading the all-time series 13-6. RU has won three of the past five meetings. This streak started with a 78-67 win over No. 9 Maryland to close the home schedule in the 2019-20 season. Over the last four meetings, the road team has won each time.

Last season, Rutgers used a closing finish to claim the road win at Maryland. The Scarlet Knights trailed 38-27 at halftime, but outscored the home team 43-21 in the second half to flip the script in an 11-point win, buoyed by 31 points from Ron Harper Jr. In the rematch at Jersey Mike's Arena last season, Maryland claimed a 68-60 win despite a double-double (13 points/11 rebounds) from center Cliff Omoruyi.

ALL-TIME SERIES
WITH A WIN
A victory over Maryland would represent:
- A 3-1 start to Big Ten play for the fourth straight season.
- The fourth win in the past six games against Maryland
- An 11-4 record through 15 games, the best start to a year since a 12-3 stretch to open the 2019-20 season.

ABOUT RUTGERS
Rutgers comes into the game on a four-game winning streak. The Scarlet Knights defeated Wake Forest (81-57), Bucknell (85-50) and Coppin State (90-57) at home by an average margin of 30.67 points. The team then went on the road and came away with a victory over the top-ranked squad in the country in one of the nation's most hostile venues.

RUTGERS LAST TIME OUT
The Scarlet Knights defeated a No. 1 ranked Boilermakers team for the second straight season, claiming its highest ranked road win in program history with a 65-64 win over Purdue at Mackey Arena.

Junior guard Cam Spencer hit the game-winning three-pointer late for RU in the team's final possession. Spencer finished with 14 points. Senior point guard Paul Mulcahy had a special night, posting a team and season-high 16 points. He also had a season-high eight rebounds while matching his career-high with four steals and posting six assists with zero turnovers. Mulcahy was the first RU player to ever post at least 16 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in a Big Ten win. No RU player in the past 12 seasons had reached that 16/8/6/4 statline with zero turnovers.

RU held Purdue to their second-lowest point total this season (by one point) and 13 points below their season average. Rutgers has held all 14 of its opponents to date to point production that is lower than their scoring average entering the game. RU has held 11 of those foes to 10+ points below their average, including the Boilermakers.

WIN AT NO. 1 PURDUE
Rutgers' win this season at No. 1 Purdue was the highest ranked road win in program history, and just the fourth ranked true road win in the past 22 seasons, with three of those wins under Pikiell. RU defeated a No. 1 ranked Purdue team for the second straight season. Rutgers became the eighth team in college basketball history to upset a No. 1 ranked team in the AP Top 25 poll in back-to-back seasons, the second to do so as an unranked team both times and the first to do so against the same team.

ABOUT MARYLAND
Maryland opened the year with an 8-0 start, vaulting to No. 13 in the AP Poll following a win over then No. 16 Illinois. The Terps are 2-4 since then, taking losses to Wisconsin, No. 7 Tennessee, No. 16 UCLA, and most recently, following two wins, dropping an 81-46 decision at Michigan. Kevin Willard is in his first season as the head coach at Maryland following 12 seasons at RU's in-state rival Seton Hall. While Willard was at the helm of the Pirates, he was 8-7 in 15 matchups against RU.

Jahmir Young, a First Team All-Conference USA pick last year at Charlotte, leads the team at 14.0 points per game, while Julian Reese paces the team at 6.8 rebounds per game. Returners Hakim Hart and Donta Scott share second on the team at 12.6 ppg. The Terps are 21st nationally in three-point defense (28.2%), the lone statistic where they rank in the top-40 nationally.
