Volleyball Downed By No. 1 Wisconsin

MADISON, WISC. --  Rutgers volleyball battled the top team in the nation on Friday night falling 3-0 to the Wisconsin Badgers at UW Field House.

The opening frame proved to be the closest for the Scarlet Knights with Rutgers tying up the set at 12-12 and trailing 15-14 before the Badgers took a 25-17 victory. Wisconsin continued with 25-4 and 25-16 set victories to extend its Big Ten-win streak to 25 matches.

No. 1 Wisconsin remains undefeated at 16-0 tying its best start in program history and improved its set win streak to 24 consecutive frames. Rutgers dropped to 9-8 overall and 1-6 in Big Ten play.

STANDOUT STATS
  • Sophomore Taylor Humphrey led Rutgers with six kills with freshman Anna Hartman and redshirt sophomore Alissa Kinkela connecting for four kills apiece.
  • Fifth-year senior Alyssa Nayar collected assists on all but three RU kills finishing the night with 16 helpers.
  • Rutgers totaled five blocks against the Badgers led by freshman Zora Hardison.
  • Freshman Kenzie Dyrstad and Kinkela led the defense with six digs each.
KEY MOMENTS
  • Set 1 (17-25) | While Wisconsin started off the night with a 6-2 lead, Rutgers would tie the frame up twice. Badger attack errors knotted the score at 10-10 and 12-12. After the final tie of the set at 12-12, the hosts responded with the next three points, but the Scarlet Knights would use back-to-back kills from Alissa Kinkela and Anna Hartman to trail 15-14. From there, however, Wisconsin would close on a 10-3 run. Taylor Humphrey and Anna Hartman led the attack with three kills each while Alyssa Nayar had helpers on 10 of RU's 11 kills.
   
  • Set 3 (16-25) | Wisconsin was in front the entire final set while Taylor Humphrey led the Scarlet Knights with three kills on seven swings to hit .429. Zora Hardison posted both her blocks in the final stanza. The Badgers hit .300 in the set, their lowest of the night.

  • Rutgers volleyball heads to Illinois to meet the Fighting Illini on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. (ET) at Huff Hall. 
  • Next week, the Scarlet Knights travel to Minnesota on Friday, Oct. 20 and return to Jersey Mike's Arena on Sunday, Oct. 22 to close out the season series with the Fighting Illini. Admission to all Rutgers home games is free.
